About Me: I've always enjoyed writing, so long as it's something I know about - like me. I'm a student. A mother. A sister. A homeowner. A perfectionist. I try to keep them as separate as possible, but sometimes they intertwine - which is NEVER a good thing. I love shoes. I love dancing, although I don't really know how. I love loud music, bonfires and the occasional glass of beer. I love my family. I love my life. And ever so slowly, I'm learning to love myself.

A week after my "new friend" incident, I ended up seated beside her again. Once again we chatted a bit. The first conversation was regarding the Smyrc Presentation (Sexual Minority Youth Resource Center) we had in class. We had to turn to our neighbor and discuss what we learned. We agreed that we didn't learn much about the program, making it difficult to write an opinion paper on the subject. She then proceeded to make negative comments about "those people" and their use of pronouns. I agreed that I didn't quite understand it, but I felt she was being insensitive. Meanwhile, I'm thinking about these kids that willingly told us about the struggles they have faced for their entire lives. For God's sake - they are just kids... but everyone is entitled to their own opinion.
During the break - we chatted about the class, then the instructor, then the young women in the class. Eventually it ended up about sex, and how nobody wants to speak up. I mentioned the girls are probably too young and think it's taboo to talk about masturbation and orgasm. She disagreed, stating that women just don't talk about doing it and probably never will.
What? Hello? Do you live a sheltered life?
Walk through a grocery store and count how many magazines have G-Spot and Orgasm and New Positions on their covers. What do you mean "women don't talk about it"? In my experience, I've talked about EVERY form of sex on the planet at one time or another with other women. We've talked about how often we masturbate, if we're multi-orgasmic, or even share special techniques...
Eventually the conversation moved to penis size. She disagreed that penis size matters. In fact, she said that the only way a small penis would cause problems is if a girl has been with a lot of guys and has her clit all stretched out from it.
I shouldn't even touch this.
I'm completely baffled as to how an adult can be so ignorant to think such nonsense. How a woman's clitoris can be affected by numerous partners is beyond me. And even if my "friend" used the proper anatomy, that statement still wouldn't make sense. So, what happens if you have a baby? Does your vagina stay the same size as the baby's head? Good Lord.
I didn't even reply. I was speechless.
The last straw was when she said, "You know the lesbian? (pointing to an empty seat and wrinkling her nose) She always leaves before the second half of class."
Huh.
When class was over, she said to me, "I have a whole hour to kill." I took it as an invitation.
I smiled and said, "I have a meeting to go to."
And walked out the door. |
